Specialist Courses

RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC)

A radio is a crucial piece of safety equipment on board, so it’s vital to understand the correct procedures. This course and exam is for anyone who operates a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio, and covers the basics of radio operation, frequencies, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore telephone calls, Digital Selective Calling, and Global Maritime Distress Safety System. No prior experience is required, and once completed, you’ll be proficient in operating the radio equipment and know all the procedures required to use it.

This comprehensive course is MCA-approved and meets the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence, as well as some commercial work afloat. Covers the recovery position in a confined space, CPR (including the drowning protocol), cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice by VHF, and helicopter rescue. Upon completion, you will have a working knowledge of first aid when using small craft and be able to support skippers of yachts and motor vessels.
